Japanese tattoos are recovering their popularity again amongst the middle class. Ironically young Japanese people going to the tattoo designs that can be completed in one sitting like a traditional American style tattoos or tribal tattoos. Traditional Irezumi still done by specialist tattooists. Because Japanese tattoos are so detailed they are also time intensive and expensive.Japanese tattoo is called in Japan as irezumi which literally means the insertion of ink under the skin leaving a permanent mark or tattoo. Tattoos in Japan is estimated to extend back to at least 10,000 years. The Ainu people, the natives of Japan, which is known to have used tattoos for decorative purposes and socially for many thousands of years.
At the beginning of the Meiji period (running from around about 1868-1912) the Japanese government, wanting to project an image of modern Japan in the west, banning tattoos, and take the connotation irezumi crime. Nevertheless, fascinated foreigners went to Japan seeking the skills tattoo artists, and traditional tattooing continued underground.
Tattoos validated by the occupation forces in 1945, but unfortunately has kept a lot to do with crime. For years, traditional Japanese tattoos are associated with the yakuza, Japanese mafia known, and many companies in Japan (such as public baths, fitness center and hot springs) still ban customers with tattoos.
